What is a Decision Matrix used for?
It is primarily a Planning & Management tool, giving you a logical approach to analyzing your decision alternatives.
  • A Decision Matrix is used to compare projects, issues or options to a set of criteria, in order to establish priority.

  • It allows teams to make decisions based on importance

  • It prioritizes complex or unclear issues

  • It achieves group consensus on the priorities

  • It allows you to make informed decisions

  • It allows you to select tasks or options to pursue from a list of possible items

  • It prioritizes actions

Method

There are five steps in creating a Decision matrix:

  1. Identify the items to be prioritized and establish criteria to measure them by

  2. List items to be prioritized on a vertical axis

  3. List criteria on a horizontal axis

  4. Measure each item against each criterion

  5. Add scores in each row and enter the totals in the far column of the matrix

It can be used to learn which are the primary customers for focus, which projects need the most resource, or which administration task needs completing earlier in the day. Give it a go, as soon as you have used this tool once, you will repeat!
