Communication DOs and DON'Ts

Examples of what to do and what not to do where a language barrier exists.
DOs
  • Research to improve your understanding of cultural norms

  • Check the suitability of speech anecdotes, analogies, and jokes with a local speaker

  • Use clear, slow speech

  • Pause more frequently when speaking

  • Use simple sentences

  • Reinforce important points by using different words to explain the same idea

  • Use active verbs

  • Use visual aids where appropriate, checking them in advance with a local colleague

  • Use appropriate gestures and facial expressions for emphasis

  • Distribute written summaries if appropriate, determining first if they should be in the local

  • Language

  • Check that your audience understands what you are saying

DON'Ts
  • Speak more loudly than normal

  • Use slang or colloquialisms

  • Use long or compound sentences

  • Use passive verbs

  • Equate poor grammar or mispronunciation with lack of intelligence
