Process improvement project - Define -

A project charter is a living document outlining the issues, targets and framework of a process improvement effort.

Teams use the charter to clarify the process issue being addressed, the reason for addressing it and what “success” looks like for those working on it. It’s also used to clarify what’s not being addressed.

 

It is the first step in a Lean Six Sigma project, and therefore takes place in the Define phase of DMAIC. The Project Charter is periodically reviewed and refined throughout the project.

 

The elements of a Project Charter generally include the:

  • Problem Statement: The problem captured in the form of a measurement.

  • Business Case: The business reasons for doing the project.

  • Goal Statement: The target of the process measurement (See how to create easily your goal statement with the goal statement builder template)

  • Timeline: When each project phase will be completed

  • Scope: What's in and what's out of the project

  • Team Members: The people who will participate in the project
